Remembering Jaime Escalante and the importance of showing that any person may achieve greatness against odds with the diligence and hard work necessary.  He taught and inspired the students of Garfield by removing the boundaries and stigma of East Los Angeles and is an example of the types of role models we should embrace to overcome stereotypes and boundaries to success.

Jaime Escalante (December 31, 1930 — March 30, 2010) (Wiki Commons) was a Bolivian-born American schoolteacher who earned renown and distinction for his work at Garfield High School, East Los Angeles, California in teaching students calculus from 1974 to 1991. Escalante was the subject of the 1988 film Stand and Deliver, in which he is portrayed by Edward James Olmos.

President Barack Obama issued a statement Wednesday praising Escalante's work.

"While most of us got to know him through the movie that depicted his work teaching inner-city students calculus, the students whose lives he changed remain the true testament to his life's work,"

I attended the memorial service this morning at Garfield High School. Photos from the event can be found at http://www.bit.ly/pab-facebook.

It was a very nice but brief event that attracted major media attention. Perhaps the loss of this tremendous teaching legend will inspire the next generation of Jaime Escalantes to arrive in East Los Angeles.
